Natural History Field Studies (Biol 131) in Baja

Academic Background:

M.S. Biology - California State University, San Diego

B.S. Wildlife Biology – University of California, Davis

Research Interests:

My past research concerned aspects of flight physiology in bats.  I am the vertebrate curator at the Great Valley Museum and work with the museum in public outreach and exhibit design. Currently I am interested in attitudes and perceptions of my local communities toward the natural sciences and how we might motivate people toward greater appreciation and ultimately political action to preserve more of our natural world.  Teaching in Bahía de los Angeles fits right in with this endeavor.  One week in Baja makes more of an impression than any traditional one semester biology class at Columbia or Glendale.

Courses taught at Glendale Community College:

Geology 101/102/111

Oceanography 115/116

Academic Background:

Geology B.S., UCLA

Geology M.S., CSUN

 Academic Interests:

My interests are climate change, oceanography, and comparative planetology. In the past, I studied the south polar cap of Mars for evidence of climate change. While at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, I looked for evidence of amino acids in Banded Iron Formations. As part of my M.S. thesis in Geology, I went to Australia to research geochemical and climate cycles. Presently, as a U.S. Navy officer in the field of Meteorology and Oceanography, I help to coordinate global weather and oceanographic forecasts.

At the same time, I enjoy my work as a part-time instructor of Oceanography and Geology at Glendale Community College. I am committed to inspiring Glendale College students to transfer to 4-year institutions and earn Bachelor's degrees, keys to professional careers. I am also  fluent in 3 languages: English, Russian, and Spanish.
