This epochal drama of marriage and the individual portrays a controlling husband, Torvald Helmer, and his wife, Nora, a submissive young woman who, when their idealized homelife collapses, comes to the realization that she must finally close the door on her husband, children, and life in "a doll's house" in order to find and live as her true self. When Henrik Ibsen's play opened in 1879, it aroused enormous controversy. Not only was it banned and censored, some actresses refused to play Nora, claiming, "No woman would ever do that!" Although much of the public agreed, Ibsen believed otherwise. In the final moments of the play, Nora embarks on a groundbreaking journey of self-discovery, challenging the rigidity of women's rights and roles in society, and invites what Ibsen refers to as "spiritual revolution."
