PROGRAM SLOs and ASSESSMENTS:

GCC's Definition of a Program* adopted by the Academic Senate: 

"Motion 2009-37 to adopt the definition of a program for the purposes of
assessment as drafted by the state Academic Senate and the Research
and Planning Group.  Cohesive sets of courses that lead to degrees
and certificates, along with student services and administrative
units, are programs.  Divisions may further delineate and define
programs based on their assessment needs."

*based on the DRAFT Glossary, the result of a collaboration between the statewide Academic Senate and the Research and Planning Group in response to an ASCCC resolution from faculty in the field.

What assessment tools could your division or service use to determine whether or not students have achieved your program's outcomes?

I.    DIRECT STANDARDIZED OPTIONS:

  • Retesting students with the "placement exam"
  • Standardized licensing exams

II.    INDIRECT PROGRAM ASSESSMENT:

  • External reviewers - sharing information and artifacts with people in other institutions, professional organizations, or advisory committees.
  • Student Satisfaction Surveys
  • Exit Interviews
  • Alumni Surveys
  • Employer Surveys
  • Graduate School Records
  • Data on Awards Granted, Retention, Success and other overall program data

III.    LOCALLY DEVELOPED ASSESSMENT:

  • Embedded Course Questions or Problems
  • Portfolios
  • Performance Assessment (Observing students in "real-life" situations)
  • Capstone Courses (Use the outcomes and assessments for the last course in a series)
  • Capstone Projects (Look at student performance on projects that they could not have completed without having completed the program)
  • Student Self Assessment
