The Verdugo Power Academy Application
is due May 17, 2013.
(Please refer to Application Process handout under Web Links).
Glendale Community College (GCC), Verdugo Workforce Investment Board (VWIB) and Glendale Water and Power (GWP) have joined in a partnership to establish a new training program for people interested in working in the power industry. The next Verdugo Power Academy training program is scheduled to begin June 17, 2013 (Summer 2013) at GCC.
Purpose and Curriculum
The Verdugo Power Academy will address the projected shortage of utility workers to fill positions in the power utility industry and the challenges in recruiting and retention, and create a local source to produce qualified candidates. The program is intended to raise awareness and interest in careers in utilities, and to focus on training workforce from the local community.
The academy will be held for sixteen weeks and cover the necessary skill sets for utility workers such as electrical line mechanics, technicians and station electricians. The curriculum combines classroom training with hands-on, practical training in an electric utility operation. The curriculum encompasses electric power principles and codes, safety, overhead line construction and pole climbing, transformers, SMART grids and more. The students enrolled in this program will have an opportunity to determine if a utility career is right for them. After they complete the program, they will be prepared to apply for an opportunity for a well-paying career with a utility. Once the program has started, the academy will expand to include the workforce needs of the water utility.
The project is funded through a Verdugo Workforce Investment Board grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that has been awarded to GCC. The Verdugo Workforce Investment Board is comprised of business, industry and community leaders that develop workforce policies and oversee government funding for training and employment activities in the Glendale, Burbank and La Canada Flintridge area.
GWP will provide facilities, materials, instructional support and technical expertise. GCC will provide the instructional curriculum. Information orientations will be held at GCC during the month of April and May 2013. Click here for the informational flyer.
