WOMEN'S GOLF

    The GCC women's golf team took first in a Western State Conference match last Monday at Olivas Links and finished second in the North/South Tournament Sunday at Buena Ventura Golf Course. Glendale finished second to Palomar College, 607 to 620, and shot a team score of 315 to win the WSC match Monday led by freshman Vicanda Ma, who shot 76 Monday to tie for low medalist. Pataporn Silawana shot 78, Hannah Lee shot 79, Thanawan Spiratchaya shot 82 and Maiya Nesbit shot 92 to round out the scoring for the Lady Vaqs.

    Glendale competes in the Desert Tourney Friday and Saturday and in a WSC match Monday hosted by Santa Barbara City College at the Santa Barbara Golf Course at 10:30 a.m.

CROSS COUNTRY

    The men and women's teams posted outstanding perfromances Saturday at the Fullerton Invitational. The women;s team finished third overall and first among community college teams with 73 points behond meet winner Loyola Marymount with 39 points and second place Long Beach State with 61 points. The men's team finished sixth overall with 136 points behind meet winner Long Beach State with 25, Cal State Fullerton was second with 58 and Pomoa Pitzer was third with 101.

    For the women, Karen Rosas finished second overall over the 3.1 mile course in 22.08.5 just five seconds behind former GCC runner and current Long Beach State star Rosa De La Toro. Allysa Selve was seventh in 22:44, Angela Martinez was 15th in 23:17.3, Grace-Graham-Zamudio was 24th in 23:25.8 and Charlen Quintanilla was 27th in 23:31.4.

    Mizrael Mendez was the top finisher for the men over the four-mile course in 25:58.7. Jesus Gutierrez was 23rd in 26:21.1, Alex Nelson was 33rd in 26:40.9, Mario Castillo was 45th in 26:52 and Vladimir Diaz was 47th in 26:52. 2.

    Glendale competes in the Fresno Invitational Saturday Sept. 10 at 9:00 a.m.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

    The Lady Vaqs fell to 1-3 this season with a pair of losees at the Victor Valley College Quad Tournament last Friday. Glendale fell to Mt. SAC in four games in the first match, 20-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-14 and lost to Riverside City College i nthe second match 25-14, 25-22 and 25-19. Sara Kert led GCC with 11 kills and two solo blocks in the loss to Riverside abd Cami Martin added 27 assists and two service aces. Raquel Valenzuela had 12 digs and Angela Gaignard and Lisa Monarrez had a pirof team blocks each.

    Glendale plays at Orange Coast College Friday Sept. 9 at 5:00 p.m.

FOOTBALL

    Glendale opened up the 2011 season with a 49-28 loss Saturday to Pasadena City College in a non-conference game for the Vaqueros. Sophomore quarterback Kevin Hunter led the Vaqueros with 207 yards passing o 21 of 40 and two touchdown passes. Joe Wiggan rushed for 70 yards on 17 carries and one score and also caught three passes from Hunter for 42 yards and one score. Timothy Broughton rused for 75 yards on 11 carries and Omar Sanchez-Barrera ran for 74 yards on 17 carries. Eugene Gandara caught 4 passes for 48 yards and one score. Defensively, Issac McDuffie had 11 tackles, 5 solo and Nick Leon had seven tackles, three solo.

    The Vaqueros face Golden West College Saturday iun a 7 p.m. non-conference game at Orange Coast College.

WOMEN'S SOCCER  

    The Lady Vaqs opened up the 2011 season with a 3-1 loss against L.A. Compton College last Friday at Sartoris Field.

    Glendale plays at L.A. Harbor College Tuesday at 6 pm and plays at West LA College Friday at 4 pm.

MEN'S SOCCER

    Glendale fell to San Bernardino Valley College 3-1 last Friday at Sartoris Field to open up the 2011 season.

    The Vaqueros play L.A. Harbor College Tuesday at 7 pm and host Chaffey College Friday at 7 pm at Sartoris Field.
