Subject:          2014-15 Academic Ranking Exercise

This is to invite the GCC faculty members, eligible for* and seeking change in their academic rank, to please submit a hard copy of the completed application form for this year’s exercise to the Governance/Senate mailbox by November 21, 2014 (late submissions will not be accepted). The appropriate application and instructions can be obtained from the Academic Senate webpage http://www.glendale.edu/senate or contact the Governance Office (ext.5393; AD249). 

You will be notified regarding the outcome of your application late in the Spring 2015 semester. Any advancement in rank is effective at the beginning of the Fall 2015 semester.

*A summary of the Academic Senate’s eligibility criteria is listed below. Please refer to Administrative Regulation 4113 for the complete policy. 

NOTE:  Faculty members who are in their fourth year of the tenure process may apply.  Please note that advancement in rank will not be awarded until tenure is received.

Professor

A tenured GCC faculty member with 12 years of full time college teaching/service,

AND (a) an earned doctorate from an accredited institution of higher learning OR (b) 84 units of college or university credit beyond a 120-unit Bachelor’s degree OR (c) satisfactory evidence of national or international eminence.  A teacher of a vocational subject must hold (a) 48 academic and/or trade experience units beyond a California Designated Subjects Credential, Class A Vocational Credential, or any other appropriate vocational education credential OR (b) 84 academic and/or trade experience units beyond a 120-unit Bachelor’s degree (a trade experience unit is equivalent to 40 hours of approved work in the subject area field).

 

Associate Professor

 

A tenured GCC faculty member with 7 years of full time college teaching/service,

AND (a) an earned Master’s or Doctoral degree from an accredited institution of higher learning OR (b) 42 units of college or university credit beyond a 120-unit Bachelor’s degree.  A teacher of a vocational subject must hold (a) a California Designated Subjects Credential, Class A Vocational Credential, or any other appropriate vocational education credential OR (b) 42 academic and/or trade experience units beyond a 120-unit Bachelor’s degree (a trade experience unit is equivalent to 40 hours of approved work in the subject area field).

 

Assistant Professor

 

A tenured GCC faculty member with four years of full time GCC teaching/service. 

A teacher of a vocational subject must also hold a California Designated Subjects Credential, Class A Vocational Credential, or any other appropriate vocational education credential.

 

Adjunct Assistant

Professor

 

An adjunct faculty member who has completed the equivalent of four years of full time teaching/service at Glendale College.  For example, if the load in a discipline is 15, then a full-time instructor would be required to teach 15 hours or units per week per semester which is equivalent to a total of 120 hours or units over 4 years.  If the load is 24, then a full-time instructor would be required to teach 24 hours or units per week per semester which is equivalent to a total of 192 hours or units over 4 years.

 

2014-15 ACADEMIC RANK TIMELINE

Fall Semester of new academic year

Notice to Apply sent out to faculty. Application period: October 1st through November 21st.

February/March

Academic Rank Committee reviews submitted applications.

 

April/May

Academic Rank recommendations are reviewed and confirmed by the Academic Senate.

May/June

Candidates are notified of their rank by the Academic Rank Chairperson; letters and certificates are distributed to faculty.

September

Board of Trustees confirms rank; this information is put into the catalog of the 2015-16 academic year.
