What Must I Know Before I Enroll?

GCCs New Distance Education Enrollment Procedures

Once enrolled in an online or hybrid courses, students must retrieve and read the (1) Welcome Letter sent by the instructor 2 days before the semester begins via GCC email and complete the (2) Course Check-In Assignment described in the Welcome Letter

A Welcome Letter:

  • Helps students unfamiliar with the distance education environment understand course expectations.
  • Tells students how and where to login.
  • Lets students know where to go for technical help and support.
  • Establishes rapport and promotes regular effective contact with the students early on.
  • Assigns a Check-In Assignment.  Faculty will design a course check-in assignment (see description below).  The check-in assignment will be administered before or in the face to face orientation.
  • Is emailed to enrolled students via GCC email. Students are responsible to retrieve and read the Welcome Letter sent to their GCC email 2 days before the semester begins.

Check-In Assignment:

The course Check-In Assignment is a mandatory requirement for all distance education courses that actively engages students in the course. If a student does not complete the course check-in assignment before Orientation Day, the student may be dropped from the class.  Directions to the Course Check-In Assignment will be in the course Welcome Letter sent via GCC email by the instructor 2 days before the semester begins.  Students are responsible to retrieve and read the Welcome Letter sent to their GCC email 2 days before the semester begins.

Orientation Meeting:

Students must attend a face to face orientation meeting offered by the instructor.  For students unable to attend the face to face orientation, the student must contact the instructor to see if alternate arrangements can be made.  Instructors have the right to drop students who do not attend the first day of instruction.  GCC or current government issued ID must be presented by the enrolled student during the orientation day.
