Background

In 2010, GCC was visited by an accreditation team representing the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) as part of the regular six-year accreditation cycle. The visiting team made nine recommendations. Recommendation 2 said that the college should increase its efforts to meet the "proficiency" level of SLO assessment, as defined by the commission. The college submitted Follow-Up Reports to the Commission in 2011 and 2012, then a Midterm Report in 2013. After the 2013 Midterm Report was discussed by the Commission, GCC received an action letter on July 8 indicating that another Follow-Up Report will be due March 15, 2014. The report must demonstrate that the college has resolved assessment issues and must conduct SLO assessment on a continuous, sustained basis, using the results of assessment for improvement.

Requirement for All Instructors to Assess and Report SLOs

As part of the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding between the Guild and the District, "The District and Guild acknowledge that assessing student learning outcomes (SLO's) and reporting the results are part of the obligations of all instructors, including adjunct instructors. Adjunct faculty shall not be required to attend meetings to write, discuss, or edit SLO's." The MOU was signed by the Guild and District negotiating teams on May 9, 2013. It was ratified by the Guild membership in May 2013. It was approved by the Board of Trustees on May 20, 2013.
