In the last two years, most courses are in Ethnic studies, Historical analysis, Multiculturalism, Politics, Social Science, usually with a concentration in one area. Below are some examples of the lower division courses required for the major.

UC Santa Barbara Latin American & Iberian Studies SPAN 104 HIST 103 and 104
UC Riverside ART 112 ETH S 120 HIST 104 POL S 103 Prior to beginning upper division work in this major, students are required to demonstrate proficiency in either Spanish or Portuguese. Proficiency will be determined through a placement exam taken at UCR, but is generally equated to two years of college level Spanish or Portuguese.
Additional course work in Spanish or Portuguese is recommended for students who are interested in careers in Latin American fields. |
UC Berkeley HIST 103 or 104 or 113
Foreign Language Requirement: Students must attain an intermediate level of competence in a primary language (either Spanish or Portuguese) equivalent to four college level semesters of instruction AND an elementary level of competence in a secondary language equivalent to two college level semesters. To complete the major, they must be prepared to take two literature courses in their primary language (Spanish or Portuguese) at Berkeley.
Students are encouraged to take as many semesters of foreign language as possible before transferring.
